COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – Zayne Browning made the tying and go-ahead free throws with 15 seconds left as Walla Walla (Wash.) stunned Southern Oregon with a 72-71 win late Saturday night in the final game of the Cascade Conference regular season at Windemuth Court.
The Wolves (5-24 overall, 4-18 CCC) pulled off the upset, a night after losing at the buzzer against Oregon Tech, behind forward Kiandre Gaddy's 31 points and nine rebounds. With under a minute to play he cut into SOU's four-point lead with a 3-pointer, then grabbed his final rebound to complete a defensive stop.
The Raiders (16-14, 13-9) had one last chance after Browning spun to the basket to draw a foul, but
K'wan Carter's short-corner attempt at the buzzer came up short.
The loss dropped the Raiders to fifth place in the standings but had no bearing on their position for next week's Cascade Conference Championships presented but U.S. Bank. Even if they'd won and forced a three-way tie for third place with Corban and Lewis-Clark State (Idaho), they'd have still dropped to the No. 5 seed due to unfavorable tiebreaker criteria.
They'll play at Corban, the No. 4 seed, at 7 p.m. in Wednesday's quarterfinal round. The teams split their regular season matchups, with SOU winning by six at home and falling in overtime in Salem.
The winner will advance to Saturday's semifinals. An automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament will be on the line in the championship, which is set for March 1.
SOU's last five losses have been decided by six points or less, or in overtime.
Atmar Mundu led the Raiders with 14 points. They trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half but led by as many as 10 thereafter.
Josh Meyer tallied 11 points, 12 rebounds and five assists.
Mason Whittaker scored 10 and
Tez Allen went for nine points, 10 rebounds and three steals.
Jake Virga scored nine and
Elijah Jackson had eight off the bench.
