Raiders sweep Redhawks in 2022 debut

ASHLAND Katie Machado and Mayze Menefee impressed in their pitching debuts and Riley Donovan picked up where she left off at the plate as No. 5 Southern Oregon swept is season-opening doubleheader against Simpson (Calif.), 3-2 and 9-1 on Saturday at University Field.

Donovan, an All-American catcher and the reigning World Series MVP, went 4-for-6 with a home run and two doubles on the day. She accounted for the Raiders' first two runs in Game 1 with a solo blast and a leadoff double that turned into another run, and with two outs in the fifth Piper Love delivered the tiebreaking RBI single that scored Deja Acosta.

That eventually made a winner of Machado, a sophomore transfer from Idaho State, after she finished off a complete game seven-hitter. She struck out eight and walked one, and got two of those strikeouts while getting out of a jam in the sixth after the Redhawks put the potential tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position with no outs.

Menefee worked four perfect innings of relief to earn the Game 2 decision. The freshman from Corning, Calif., entered with the bases loaded and SOU trailing 1-0 in the third inning and struck out the side before cruising the rest of the way.

The Raiders rewarded her with four runs in the fourth, four more in the fifth and a mercy-rule-triggering RBI single from Lauren Weinberg in the sixth.

Weinberg went 4-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and a run scored in Game 2. Kailer Fulton and Sarah Kerling held down the bottom of the lineup with two hits apiece, combining for three runs scored and two RBIs.

Rylan Austin added three hits on the day. The junior shortstop also anchored a defense that played error-free in both games.

SOU and Simpson will play two more Sunday in Redding, Calif. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
