Love, Menefee spark SOU in sweep of Eagles

BELLEVUE, Wash. – Freshmen Piper Love and Mayze Menefee helped the Southern Oregon softball team successfully turn the page on Northwest (Wash.) in 5-3 and 5-2 victories on Saturday at Bellevue College Field.

After suffering back-to-back Cascade Conference losses against the Eagles (10-24 overall, 7-13 CCC) on Friday, the Raiders (29-9, 12-5) recovered as Love connected for her second and third home runs of the series and Menefee pitched 7 2/3 scoreless innings of relief.

In Game 1, they claimed the third and final conference game of the set behind Menefee and Phelicity Fa'aita's and 10 combined strikeouts. Fa'aita pitched 4 1/3 innings to earn the decision and improve to 7-2, and Menefee came on for an eight-out save in which she allowed one hit and struck out three.

Love hit a solo home run in the second and Ashton Cathey tallied two RBIs, including one on a squeeze-bunt in the seventh to provide the Raiders with an insurance run. They'd led 4-0 at one point after Riley Donovan's bases-loaded walk in the fourth.

Menefee threw five shutout innings after coming on in the third in Game 2. She scattered four hits and struck out five without a walk, and brought her record to 4-1.

Love went 3-for-4 with an RBI single in the first and a solo homer, her fifth of the year, in the fifth. Deja Acosta produced her second two-hit game of the day, drove in two runs and scored another. Riley Donovan went 2-for-4 with an RBI double.

Love finished the series 8-for-14 with five RBIs and four runs scored. Donovan and Fa'aita finished it with six hits apiece.

The Raiders will play their ninth and 10th consecutive road games on Wednesday, visiting top-ranked Oregon Tech for the second half of their season series. They'll return to Ashland to face Warner Pacific on Friday and Saturday.
