ASHLAND – For the second time in as many days, the Southern Oregon volleyball team scored a straight-set victory against Park Gilbert (Ariz.) on Friday at Lithia Motors Pavilion to wrap up the season-opening Raider Invitational with a 2-1 record.
Junior middle
Sadie Byrd topped off an impressive tournament with nine kills on 17 attempts and four assisted blocks, and sophomore outside hitter
Hailey Van Well poured in a match-high 10 kills in the 25-21, 25-22, 25-22 decision. The duo dominated late in the match, as Van Well registered five kills and the second set and Byrd had five in the third.
The Raiders posted a .232 attacking average compared to a .153 mark for the Buccaneers, who dropped to 1-3 after also dropping a three-setter to No. 11-ranked Concordia (Neb.) earlier in the day.
SOU finished strong in every frame to avoid any drama. Leading 22-21 in the first, two Buccaneers errors and Byrd's kill shut down the initial threat. Tied 22-22 in the second,
Hannah Stadstad and
Mylena Testoni came through with kills to make it 2-0. And tied 22-22 again in the third, Byrd and Gordon came through with consecutive kills following a Park service error.
Testoni had seven kills and 12 digs while Gordon and Stadstad contributed six kills each. Setters
Hannah Randall and
Gwen Sheldon both amassed 14 assists and
Kayla Neidigh went for nine digs.
Byrd finished the week with a .347 attacking average and 16 blocks, averaging 1.5 per set. Van Well accumulated 29 kills over three matches.
Miranda Bailey and Railey Druxton led Park with eight kills apiece, but combined for 11 attacking errors.
The Raiders conclude non-conference play next week with four matches in Rocklin, Calif., at the William Jessup Invitational. They'll return home to start their Cascade Conference schedule on Sept. 2-3 against Walla Walla (Wash.) and Lewis-Clark State (Idaho).
