Raiders' streak ends against Tech

ASHLAND – Oregon Tech ended Southern Oregon's winning streak at nine matches in a 22-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-22 Cascade Conference upset on Wednesday night at Lithia Motors Pavilion.

The No. 17-ranked Raiders (10-2 overall, 4-1 CCC) let a couple leads slip away in the setback. After winning the first set, they had leads of 11-4 and 17-13 in the second.

Once the Owls (6-5, 3-2) got rolling in their attack, they didn't slow down. They hit at averages of .344 in the second, .361 in the third, and .333 in the fourth. Nicole Reyes had 15 kills and Ashley Ripplinger put down 14, leading OIT to a cumulative .316 average – easily the best for an SOU opponent this season.

The Raiders got in their own way, too, with a season-high 13 service errors. After rallying back from a 24-21 deficit with three straight points in the third, they put a serve into the net and lost on an attacking error on the next play. After taking a 20-19 lead with a 4-1 run in the fourth, they did the same thing.

The Owls ended the match with three straight points that broke a 22-22 tie, winning on Aubrey Kievit's ace. Kievit (23 digs) also dominated in the back row with Kaley Whalen (17 digs).

The loss spoiled Hailey Van Well's 17-kill night on a .483 average. Mylena Testoni totaled 19 kills and eight digs, Kayla Neidigh added 11 digs, and Trinity Atuatasi had 10.

Gwen Sheldon's 32 assists helped the Raiders hit .287.

SOU will be home again this weekend, hosting Bushnell on Friday and No. 6-ranked Corban on Saturday. Both matches start at 7 p.m.
