ASHLAND –
Hailey Van Well and No. 22-ranked Southern Oregon brought their best stuff in an effusive Cascade Conference sweep of Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) on Saturday evening at Lithia Motors Pavilion.
Van Well, SOU's sophomore all-star, hammered 14 kills on 26 attacks from the outside and the Raiders buckled down defensively to seal their seventh consecutive win and fifth in a row in straight sets by scores of 25-20, 25-16 and 25-20. They improved to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the CCC, while the Warriors dropped to 6-2 and 2-1.
Equally impressive as the Raiders' attack – to which
Hannah Stadstad added eight kills,
Mylena Testoni seven and
Simone Gordon six – was their floor defense. They leveled LCSC to a .088 attacking average as the Warriors' top hitters, Grecia Ung Enriquez and Cassidy Nelson, combined for nearly as many errors (9) as kills (11).
Testoni corralled a match-high 12 digs. Libero
Kayla Neidigh had a few of the sensational variety among her 10, and
Trinity Atuatasi established a new career-high with nine.
"What I'm most impressed by is our commitment to getting a hand on every ball defensively," SOU head coach
Josh Rohlfing said. "It's something we've discussed a lot early in the season and it's paying dividends. We were relentless all night."
Hannah Randall helped in that department with six digs and finished with a match-high 19 assists. Beside her in the two-setter rotation,
Gwen Sheldon had 16 assists in leading the Raiders to a .239 attack.
They never trailed in the first set, and tied 18-18 they went ahead on consecutive Gordon kills followed by Testoni's service ace. Van Well carried them through the second after they fell behind 5-1, putting down six of her kills and recording three straight late in the frame.
Van Well had four more kills in the third. She and Testoni went back-to-back to put the Raiders up 22-19, and three straight Warriors errors ended the match.
"I thought Hailey passed well and obviously her stats show that she was pretty dominant in the front row," Rohlfing said. "So much of what we saw with the pins was because of our middles being available and drawing their middle block. We did a nice job of playing team offense but Hailey was fantastic and it seemed like she found a hole on every swing."
SOU plays its first CCC road matches next week, Friday at Evergreen (Wash.) and Saturday at Northwest (Wash.). Both teams swept their conference-opening road trips at Multnomah and Warner Pacific.
