Raiders score 4 in 1st half to dump Argos

ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon women's soccer team got comfortable in a hurry in its Raider Stadium debut, marking the occasion with a breakout performance and a 4-0 win against Providence (Mont.) on Friday afternoon at Raider Stadium.

Jasmine Gray, Phoebe Bunn, Mia Santander and Sophia Connell each tallied for the first time this season in the opening half as the first half as the Raiders (3-4-1 overall, 2-1-1 Cascade Conference) scored as many goals over the first 39 minutes as they had in their previous eight games combined.

The goal total was their highest in 22 games dating back to last season. They're working on a three-game unbeaten streak heading into Saturday's noon matchup against Rocky Mountain (Mont.).

Ashlynn Hernandez kept the Argos (1-5-1, 1-2-1) off the board with five saves, but the run of play was comfortably in the Raiders' favor as they posted 20 shots to UP's nine.

Gray struck first on a rebound in the 14th minute after Gabbie Johnson took two shots around the box – the first of which was blocked, and the second cleaned up by Gray after UP keeper Reilyn Davis lunged to make a save. Johnson was credited with an assist.

Bunn converted a penalty kick, the result of an Argos hand-ball, to make it 2-0 in the 23rd. Santander and Connell followed with perhaps the most impressive shots of the day in the 38th and 39th minutes, both shooting from 25-plus-yards deep and slotting just inside the right post.

The Raiders have given up just three goals in seven home games since the start of last season.

They'll return to the pitch against a Rocky squad that lost 1-0 on Friday at Oregon Tech, falling to 0-2-2 in CCC play without a goal to show yet for its efforts.
