COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – Southern Oregon atoned for an eight-minute scoring drought with an overwhelming finish, running its Cascade Conference winning streak to eight games by a score of 70-46 against Walla Walla (Wash.) on Friday at Windemuth Court.
Tied 30-30 with the Wolves, the 23rd-ranked Raiders' offensive luck turned at the four-minute mark of the third quarter, when
Kami Walk's layup triggered a 10-0 run. From that point on they shot 16-of-23 from the field to remain unbeaten in 14 all-time meetings with WWU.
Walk, a junior all-star forward, produced her second double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Brianna Phiakhamngon scored 14, hitting a pair of 3-pointers, and
Kalei Iwami joined her in the backcourt with 10 points and four steals. Iwami scored eight in the Raiders' 30-point fourth, which marked their highest-scoring quarter of the season.
SOU went to 13-3 overall and 9-1 in the CCC entering Saturday's 4 p.m. visit to first-place and No. 10-ranked Lewis-Clark State (Idaho), which – excepting a pair of COVID-19 forfeits last season – has won 25 straight conference regular-season games entering its matchup Friday night against Oregon Tech.
The Wolves (3-10, 2-8) became SOU's fourth opponent in its last five outings that failed to crack 50 points. The Raiders rank second in the NAIA in points allowed per game (51.0) and ninth in points allowed per 100 possessions (74.7).
Senior guard
Danasia Allison spurred the defensive pressure with five steals, her second-highest total of the season. She added six rebounds and four assists.
Emma Schmerbach checked in with eight points on 4-of-7 shooting and four rebounds, throwing in three of her buckets during the game-changing run.
