ASHLAND – The Cascade Conference regular season championship is settled, but there is a lot left to shake out elsewhere in the women's soccer standings entering the home stretch.
Southern Oregon's status is as fluid as anyone's with three games remaining, all at Raider Stadium. The Raiders (6-5-4 overall, 3-2-4 CCC) stand in eighth place with 13 points, but they have a game in hand compared to the three teams directly ahead of them and could theoretically finish as high at third. They host 11th-place Evergreen (Wash.) (2-10-2, 2-7-1) at 2:30 p.m. Sunday before facing two teams in front of them – Northwest (Wash.) (8-5-2, 6-2-2) at 2:30 p.m. Monday, and Bushnell (5-6-2, 4-4-2) at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
PLAYOFF PICTURE: The Raiders need two more points or a Warner Pacific tie or loss to clinch a spot in the eight-team CCC Tournament for the 13th consecutive season. The tournament is scheduled for Nov. 6-10 in Springfield, where SOU has advanced to the semifinal round each of the last three seasons. College of Idaho, ranked No. 15 in Wednesday's NAIA Top 25 poll, last week locked up the regular season title, the CCC's top seed and an automatic spot in the NAIA Championships. The CCC's second automatic bid goes to the conference tournament champ, unless the top seed wins it, in which case it goes to the other finalist.
LAST WEEK IN REVIEW: Oregon Tech won in Ashland for the first time since 2013 last Friday, taking a 2-1 decision to end SOU's home unbeaten streak at 11 games.
Brooklyn Hayes leveled the score for the Raiders in the 82nd minute with a header, but Owls forward Shalynai Naputi struck the game-winner from 20 yards deep just 90 seconds later. It was the first time a visitor scored multiple goals at Raider Stadium since April 5, 2021.
BRIEFLY:
- Sunday is senior day for two mainstays in SOU's lineup: Sophia Connell and Malaika Quigley. Connell earned All-CCC honorable mention a season ago and is the only Raider to have started all 53 games over the last three seasons. In addition to compiling nine assists, the defender from Portland has contributed to 34 shutouts in her career. Quigley is a two-time honorable mention recipient – as well as a qualifier last spring for the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the javelin – and has also made 53 career starts. Her career totals stand at 13 goals and eight assists, leaving her just four points shy of a top-10 spot in the Raider record book. Her seven goals this season rank fifth among all CCC players.
- Two more victories, or a win and a tie, would give the Raiders a winning record in CCC play for the ninth year in a row. Since Jenni Rosenberg became the head coach in 2013, they have gone 73-32-13 combined in conference matches. Rosenberg needs three more wins to become the first Raider women's soccer coach with 100 in a career.
- Ashlynn Hernandez's .854 save percentage in conference play is the second best in the CCC. She has accumulated 41 saves, and the only keeper with a higher percentage, College of Idaho's Hannah McFadden (.933), has needed to make just 14.
- SOU is 42-9-8 at home since moving into Raider Stadium in 2014, and hasn't dropped back-to-back home games since 2015.
