Byrd totals 10 blocks as No. 16 Raiders win 8th straight

ASHLAND – Southern Oregon's Sadie Byrd used the final night of her senior weekend to make another lasting impression in Saturday's 25-17, 25-14, 25-14 dismantling of Northwest (Wash.) at Lithia Motors Pavilion.

Byrd assisted 10 of the No. 16-ranked Raiders' 12 blocks as they sunk the Eagles to a .010 attacking average to bring their winning streak to eight matches. The 6-foot middle from Maple Valley, Wash., ranks third in the NAIA in blocks per set (1.48) and had reached double figures three times previously in her career, but never before in three sets of action.

She added five kills on 10 swings as SOU (23-5 overall, 16-4 Cascade Conference) won its 17th, 18th and 19th consecutive sets. The win clinched a top-three seed in the CCC Tournament for the Raiders, who complete the regular season next weekend at No. 6 Corban and Bushnell.

During their active eight-match run, five opponents have attacked at sub-.100 averages against the Raiders, and two more have been under .200.

Marin Mackey and Hannah Stadstad aided the latest defensive display with five blocks apiece. They also led the Raiders with seven and eight kills respectively. Their setters ran a crisp show – Vitoria Mattos with 16 assists and seven digs, and Annie Hite with 13 assists and four service aces.

Northwest (15-10, 12-8) – which defeated the Raiders in four sets Sept. 29 in Kirkland – accumulated 26 attacking errors compared to 27 kills. Their top hitter, Kaitlyn Mickle, entered the match averaging 3.2 kills per set and totaled four on a negative-.107 clip.

The Raiders trailed 3-0 in the third set before ticking off seven straight points, four of which they scored with blocks. Byrd and Mackey were in on three apiece.

The Raiders also had runs of 7-0 and 6-0 in the second set. They scored five straight early in the first and ended the frame with four unanswered – a spurt capped by a Byrd and Mackey assisted block.
