LA GRANDE – A week after becoming a Southern Oregon upset victim, No. 7-ranked Corban finished with a flurry to avoid the same outcome again and defeat the No. 12 Raiders 23-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-19 in the semifinal round of the Cascade Conference Championships presented by U.S. Bank on Friday at Quinn Coliseum.
Hours after they defeated Bushnell in the quarterfinals, the Raiders (26-6 overall) were tied at one set apiece and had a 24-19 lead in the third before things went south. The Warriors (26-5) fought off set point five times and scored seven unanswered to end the frame, then led from start to finish in the fourth.
They snapped an 11-match SOU winning streak. Right-side hitter Makayla Roginski had 15 kills on 28 attempts and was in on back-to-back blocks that tied the third at 24 apiece.
Rylee Troutman, who on Thursday was named the CCC Attacker of the Year for the second straight season, was limited to a .071 average on 56 swings but delivered two kills during the match-swinging run and a service ace to end it. She finished with 14 kills.
The outcome spoiled a stellar outing for SOU outside hitter
Marin Mackey, who went for 18 kills and eight digs.
Megan Perry and
Hannah Stadstad had 12 kills apiece, and
Sadie Byrd recorded six kills and seven blocks.
The Warriors, seeded No. 2 in the tournament, moved on to play in Saturday's final against top seed Eastern Oregon.
The Raiders are still a lock to appear in the NAIA Championships Opening Round on Nov. 18 and are likely to host. The 48-team field and matchups will be announced at noon Monday.
