PLAYOFF PICTURE: The eight-team Cascade Conference Championships presented by U.S. Bank begin Monday at Les Schwab Sports Park in Springfield, where Southern Oregon will fight to keep its season alive after going 8-6-4 overall and 5-3-4 in CCC play during the regular season. As the No. 7 seed, the Raiders open with a 5 p.m. quarterfinal match against No. 2 seed Carroll (Mont.) (11-1-4, 8-1-3). The lowest remaining seed plays the highest remaining seed in Wednesday's semifinals, meaning if the Raiders survive they'll almost certainly move on to face regular season champion College of Idaho.
The Yotes, ranked No. 15 in last week's NAIA Top 25 poll, clinched the CCC's first automatic bid to be part of the 40-team NAIA Championships field. The CCC's second bid will go to the tournament champion, or, if C of I wins it, to the other finalist. The national playoff field will be announced Nov. 13.
SOU VS. CARROLL: The Raiders' first matchup with Carroll yielded one of their most encouraging results of the season – a 1-1 draw Oct. 14 in Helena in which freshman
Abby McKean scored a go-ahead goal in the 65th minute and
Ashlynn Hernandez made four second-half saves. Carroll's Deanna Lord equalized in the 72nd. The Raiders are 4-7-2 all-time against the Saints and unbeaten in their last four matchups. This will be their second CCC Tournament meeting; the first was in the 2015 semifinals, where the Saints advanced with a 2-0 victory.
HOW THEY GOT HERE: A slew of season-ending injuries put a major dent in an already inexperienced SOU roster, but the Raiders manufactured their ninth consecutive winning CCC record anyway to return to the postseason, finishing just four points short of a top-three spot in the standings. They took advantage of the weak spots in the circuit, going 4-0-2 against teams with losing records, and proved dangerous against the best with a tie against No. 2 seed Carroll and a win at No. 3 seed Eastern Oregon. In conference play, senior
Malaika Quigley (5 goals, 1 assist) and freshman
Iniana Hammond (2 goals, 3 assists) led the team in points, while senior goalkeeper
Ashlynn Hernandez posted a .820 save percentage.
Carroll has returned to form after finishing sixth or lower each of the previous three full seasons. The Saints are seeking their first tournament title since 2015 behind senior midfielder Emily Funseth, who leads the team with 10 goals and four assists. They've turned in nine clean sheets and took their only loss against College of Idaho, 3-0.
SOU TOURNAMENT HISTORY: The Raiders are in the tournament for the 13th consecutive season. They've reached the semifinals three seasons in a row and five of the last seven, but were eliminated by College of Idaho in 2021 and 2022 – both 1-0 affairs. They are seeking their first-ever appearance in the title game and their second trip to the NAIA Championships after first qualifying in 2019.
