ASHLAND –
Kami Walk and the No. 21-ranked Southern Oregon women's basketball team were too much for winless College of Idaho in a 72-53 decision that marked the start of the Cascade Conference season for both teams Friday at Lithia Motors Pavilion.
Walk, a senior all-star forward, logged 28 points, her highest total ever in a CCC game, and nine rebounds. In contrast with her usual punishing play around the basket, she did so with a pure shooting stroke – hitting 4-of-5 attempts from 3-point range and all 10 of her free throws.
The Raiders upped their overall record to 4-1 entering Saturday's key 3 p.m. matchup with No. 18-ranked and defending conference champion Eastern Oregon, which fell in the final seconds of its conference opener at Oregon Tech.
They never trailed against the Yotes (0-7), who misfired on 20 of their first 21 tries from 3 to fall behind 31-19 at halftime and by as many as 21 points in the third quarter.
SOU point guard
Meghan McIntyre had 11 points, three steals and three assists.
Emma Schmerbach added eight points, seven rebounds and three blocks, and
Clara Robbins collected a game-high 10 boards.
After temporarily exiting with an injury minutes before halftime, Walk returned in the third quarter to score 13 points while hitting three straight 3-pointers.
Makayla Scurlock scored all five of her points in the fourth.
Eleven different players contributed at least one bucket for the Raiders, who have secured each of their wins by 15 or more points.
Mia Austin finished with 20 points, including 14 in the second half, to lead the Yotes. They've lost four consecutive games against SOU.
