SOU stumbles in overtime against No. 24 OIT

ASHLAND – The final wave of momentum in a series of them went No. 24-ranked Oregon Tech's way in a 92-88 Cascade Conference overtime win against Southern Oregon on Wednesday night at Lithia Motors Pavilion.

Erik Fraser scored 27 points on 10-of-15 shooting, Jamison Guerra recorded 20 points and 14 assists, and the backcourt duo took over late as the Owls improved to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the CCC while handing the Raiders (6-5, 4-1) their first circuit loss.

In the second half alone, the Owls erased the final remnants of a 14-point deficit, blew an 11-point lead, and came back from four points down in the final 2 ½ minutes. Guerra weaved into the lane and finished to tie the game at 79-79 with 21 seconds left before SOU's Mason Whittaker missed a corner 3-pointer at the buzzer. In OT, Guerra's tiebreaking three-point play inside put OIT in front for good with 1:25 left.

Junior guard Casson Rouse scored 26 points in his SOU debut, and his fifth 3-pointer of the night cut OIT's four-point lead to one with 36 seconds remaining. Fraser answered back, taking Guerra's final assist and sticking the dagger 3 with 18 seconds to play.

The game was the first between the teams in Ashland to go past regulation since 2006. The Raiders dominated it early, shooting 20-of-31 in the first half and jumping out to a 26-12 lead eight minutes into the game. They shot 14-of-39 after building a nine-point halftime lead, but a late 21-7 spurt put them back in control anyway before Guerra brought the Owls back.

Cole McAninch scored 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting, and Teron Bradford compiled 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists for the Raiders. They combined for 23 points in the first half. Khalil Chatman added 13 points, six rebounds and four assists, and his bucket inside had the Raiders up 76-72 at the 3:42 mark.

The Raiders, Owls, College of Idaho and Corban sit in a four-way tie for second place behind 6-0 Lewis-Clark State (Idaho).

SOU returns to action Jan. 5-6 at home against Multnomah and Warner Pacific.
