PRINEVILLE – Depth was the difference in the No. 3-ranked Southern Oregon women's wrestling team's 31-18 defeat of No. 15 Eastern Oregon on Wednesday night at Crook County High School.
The Mountaineers' lack of it resulted in forfeits in four of 10 weight classes, giving the Raiders 20 free points and a clear path to victory without any of their regular starters.
SOU – which has 14 of its top individuals traveling early Thursday morning to this weekend's Grand View Open in Des Moines, Iowa – competed with a group of backups while keeping its dual record perfect at 7-0. The Raiders needed only to win two of the five contested weight classes and
Liv Villanueva and
Desinee Lopez came through.
At 109 pounds, Villianueva handled No. 17-ranked Stephanie Blankenship in a 12-2 upset by technical fall. And at 130, Lopez pinned Madelyn Mazemke 41 seconds into the match.
Jordynn Robson (130) and
Averie Stockwell (155) added a team point apiece by scoring in their losses by technical fall.
SOU's forfeit victors were
Diamond Lopez (101),
Marissa Kurtz (116),
Ysela Gradillas (170) and
Ramona Jimenez (191).
