COSTA MESA, Calif. –
Lauren Weinberg and
Riley Donovan jump-started No. 10 Southern Oregon's offense following the Raiders' first loss, as they bounced back from a 4-3 extra-inning setback with an 11-0 thumping in five innings for a split with Vanguard (Calif.) on Thursday.
Katie Machado earned her second win of the young season in Game 2, striking out seven in a two-hit complete game. Weinberg went 3-for-4 with a double, four RBIs and three runs scored, and Donovan hit her 29th career home run.
The Raiders (3-1), who swept the Lions last week in Ashland, scored seven runs in the fourth inning to end the contest early.
Sammie Pemberton was 2-for-3 with an RBI double and a run scored, and
Lindsey Stripling added two hits and an RBI.
In Game 1, SOU fell behind 3-1 and forced extras with an unearned run in the sixth inning and
Cayla Williams' RBI infield single in the seventh. In the eighth – where the international tiebreaker was applied, placing a runner on second base for each team to start their respective at-bats – the Raiders failed to push across a run and the Lions (4-4) won it on Carli Row's one-out single.
Williams went the distance in the circle for SOU. Two of the four runs on her ledger were unearned as the Raiders committed three errors. She struck out six and gave up eight hits without a walk.
Stripling had two hits for the Raiders, including a single that plated
Kailer Fulton for their first run in the fifth inning.
The Raiders play two more Friday at Hope International (Calif.). Their doubleheader is set for an 11 a.m. start.
