HERMISTON –
Deja Acosta's four-hit game helped the No. 10-ranked Southern Oregon softball team split Sunday's doubleheader against No. 19 Eastern Oregon and go home with a 3-1 series victory.
After sweeping Saturday's Cascade Conference twin bill, the Raiders dropped the final CCC counter in Game 1, 3-0, as Kaylie Hoskins shut them out with a two-hitter. The offense came alive with 16 hits for a 13-1, five-inning win in the non-conference finale.
SOU ended the series at 12-4 overall and 5-1 in the CCC, in a three-way tie for first place, and EOU at 12-6 and 4-2.
Acosta, a senior second baseman, went 4-for-4 with a triple, four RBIs, three runs scored and a pair of stolen bases out of the leadoff spot in Game 2.
Riley Donovan was 3-for-4 with a two-run home run, her fourth of the season, that gave the Raiders a 7-0 lead in the second inning.
Over the four-game set, Acosta reached base nine times with seven RBIs, five runs and four stolen bases on five attempts, while Donovan totaled eight hits with a pair of homers and eight RBIs.
Katie Machado won her fourth consecutive decision in Game 2 to improve to 5-1. She allowed two hits, walked one and struck out five.
Faith Moultrie helped her with two hits, two RBIs and a run scored.
Hoskins – who had shut the Raiders out through the first five innings of Saturday's 6-5 SOU win in extra innings – dominated Game 1 with nine strikeouts. The Mountaineers finally gave her a lead in the sixth, breaking up
Cayla Williams' shutout with three runs. After Maddy Stateler led off with a double, Haley Tyree delivered the go-ahead blow with a single and later came in to score on a passed ball.
SOU outscored the Mountaineers 32-14 on the weekend.
The Raiders return home next week for a four-game series against Providence (Mont.). Friday's doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. and Saturday's at 11 a.m.
