ASHLAND – The No. 4-ranked Southern Oregon softball team streaked into the postseason with its fifth straight win, topping British Columbia 10-4 to secure the No. 2 seed in the Cascade Conference on Sunday afternoon at University Field.
The Raiders finished the regular season at 40-9 overall and 25-5 in the circuit, tied with No. 8 College of Idaho but in possession of the head-to-head tiebreaker. They'll get a first-round bye in the double-elimination CCC Tournament next week in Klamath Falls and play at 4:30 p.m. Friday against the winner of an early game between C of I, the No. 3 seed, and No. 6 seed Carroll (Mont.).
SOU won all three of its regular-season games against the Thunderbirds (24-19, 17-13), the latest being a make-up game of a contest that was postponed on March 25 in Canada.
The Raiders totaled 14 hits, getting two apiece from
Deja Acosta (2 runs, 1 RBI),
Sarah Kerling (1 run) and
Sammie Pemberton (2 RBIs, 1 run). They also took advantage of five UBC errors, scoring seven of their runs unearned.
SOU went ahead for good with a three-run third inning, as
Riley Donovan hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly and
Sammie Pemberton followed by lacing a two-run double.
Starting pitcher
Holly Fletcher got the decision to improve to 4-1. She recorded all but the final out and held the Thunderbird to one run through the first six innings.
The entirety of the CCC Tournament will play out May 5-7 in Klamath Falls, hosted by top-ranked Oregon Tech. The 10 hosts of the NAIA Championships Opening Round – scheduled for May 15-17 – will be revealed Monday. Based on their ranking, the Raiders can expect to be among them.
