SOU splits, takes series from College of Idaho

ASHLAND – Senior pitcher Cayla Williams was undeterred by her roughest start of the season, regrouping in the circle and with the bat to give No. 5 Southern Oregon a doubleheader split and a series win against No. 8 College of Idaho on Saturday at University Field.

After sweeping Friday's twin bill, the Raiders dropped the third and final Cascade Conference game of the set 10-6 as the Yotes chased Williams by batting around in the first inning. She got the ball again in Game 2 and pitched a four-hitter while going 3-for-3 with a double and four RBIs at the plate, leading SOU to a 9-1 victory that ended in five innings.

The Raiders ended the weekend alone in second place, moving to 27-7 overall and 15-4 in the CCC. The Yotes stand at 33-6 and 18-5 in third place.

C of I's Game 1 win snapped a regular-season losing streak against SOU that spanned 12 games dating back to 2018, and marked SOU's first home loss of the season. Lexi Navarrete's RBI double sparked the Yotes' five-run first inning, and she went 3-for-3 with four runs scored and two RBIs in the contest. Madelyn Powell contributed four hits and two RBIs.

The Yotes' starter, Katelyn Wilfert, didn't get out of the first inning either. She yielded three runs before Hannah McNerny came on to pitch the final 6 2/3 innings in relief to earn the decision – working around 14 hits as SOU left 13 runners on base. Deja Acosta (4-for-4, 2 runs, 1 RBI) and Kailer Fulton (3-for-5, 1 run) helped keep the Raiders in the game.

Acosta added two more hits, two more RBIs and two more runs scored in Game 2. She finished the series with nine runs scored and nine hits – none more consequential than her walk-off home run in Friday's opener.

Williams kept the Yotes quiet in her bounce-back start without recording a strikeout in a 68-pitch outing, shutting them out over their final four frames. She also tied the score at 1-1 with an RBI single in the first, and laced a two-run double during the Raiders' seven-run second. Five of their runs that inning were unearned after a couple errors behind C of I starter Annie Polster.

Fulton and Rylan Austin chipped in two hits apiece in the contest. Williams finished the weekend 9-for-14 with three doubles at the plate.

The Raiders will spend the next two weeks on the road, visiting Carroll (Mont.) on April 14-15 and Warner Pacific on April 21-22. They're back home to face top-ranked Oregon Tech on April 25.
