KLAMATH FALLS – Oregon Tech scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to knock Southern Oregon out of the Cascade Conference Championships presented by U.S. Bank and walk off with a 7-6 victory on Sunday afternoon at Stilwell Stadium.
With the No. 4-ranked Raiders leading 6-4, Jayce Seavert's leadoff single started the rally before the next batter, Lexi Klum, tied the score by pulling her first home run of the season over the fence in left field. Mckenzie Staub then became the third straight Owl to reach with an infield single. After pinch-runner Maddie DeVerna was sacrificed to second base and moved to third on a groundout, another infield single by Zoe Allen brought her in as the winning run.
The No. 1-ranked Owls (45-7 overall) advanced to play No. 6 College of Idaho in the championship round, needing to defeat the Yotes twice to defend their title in the double-elimination tournament.
SOU (42-11) – which lost to C of I in its tourney opener on Friday but stayed alive by defeating British Columbia and Eastern Oregon on Saturday – will be off until hosting a four-team bracket in the NAIA Championships Opening Round from May 15-17. The Raiders will learn which teams will visit Ashland when the 40-team national tournament field is announced at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
They were on the brink of defeating OIT for the first time this season after erasing a 4-1 deficit with a five-run third inning. It started with a
Sarah Kerling hit and back-to-back Owls errors that loaded the bases for
Riley Donovan, who punched a two-run single into left field.
Sammie Pemberton drove in the tying run while reaching on the third error of the inning, and
Ashton Cathey put SOU in front with a single to center.
Lauren Weinberg's groundout later made it a two-run lead.
Cathey also hit a solo home run for the Raiders' first score in the second inning, her second in as many days.
Holly Fletcher kept the Raiders in the game with six innings of solid relief work. She only allowed one run until the seventh inning and gave way to
Katie Machado after Klum's homer.
At the time of publication, OIT and C of I were still tied in the 12th inning of their first matchup.
