Raiders rough up Jessup, move to 2-0

CALDWELL, Idaho – Where are the goals going to come from for the Southern Oregon women's soccer team? Three days into the season, the Raiders have already formulated a few good answers.

They scored in bunches to beat Jessup (Calif.) 4-0 on Tuesday at Simplot Stadium, moving to 2-0 in non-conference play with their second shutout. Senior Malaika Quigley registered the first two-goal game of her career, freshman Iniana Hammond tallied her second of the season, and freshman Brooklyn Hayes got on the board for the first time in the neutral-site matchup.

Ashlynn Hernandez, SOU's junior goalkeeper, turned in her 15th all-time clean sheet by matching a career-high with six saves.

The Warriors, picked to finish seventh in the Golden State Athletic Conference after going 3-9-2 last season, were on the field for the first time this season. They fell behind for good in the 27th minute, when Sophia Connell assisted Quigley's first goal with a corner kick.

In the 39th, Hammond made it 2-0 by lacing in a 20-yard free kick. Quigley and Hayes tacked on in succession during the second half, and Mia Ammons was credited with an assist of Hayes' score.

After losing five of their top-six goal scorers from last season, the Raiders, as in Sunday's match at Simpson, stayed on the attack. They accumulated eight shots on goal and are up to 20 through two outings.

The degree of difficulty will increase next time out. They'll remain in Caldwell for Thursday's noon Pacific Time matchup against No. 9-ranked Embry-Riddle (Ariz.), which went 17-2-3 last year and was among the last 10 teams standing in the NAIA Championships.
