GLENDALE, Ariz. – One late flash of
Adrian Villegas' brilliance was all Southern Oregon needed to escape Arizona Christian with a 1-0 victory Saturday night at ACU Field.
Villegas, a senior all-star from Hood River, struck in the 79th minute for his 22nd career goal with a 25-yard dagger outside the box. Alex Hjumland found him in space with the assist, keeping the Raiders perfect at 3-0 in non-conference play.
The loss was the first of the season for the Firestorm (2-1), who matched the Raiders with five shots on goal. SOU keeper
Casey Ruvolo stopped each of them, while Villegas gave ACU's Carlos Gallardo no chance on his final delivery.
The Raiders had a 17-11 shots advantage overall.
Evan Norconk came on to put a pair on target.
Villegas joined freshman
Moh Reynolds as the only Raiders with multiple goals this season, while Hjumland became the eighth Raider with a goal involvement. Villegas has notched four game-winners since the start of last season.
SOU will remain in Arizona to play at Ottawa on Monday, scheduled for a 10:30 a.m. start time.
