ASHLAND – One Southern Oregon blowout was expected Friday night. The second caught the No. 3-ranked team in the NAIA off guard inside Bob Riehm Arena.

After another thumping of Simpson (Calif.), 52-4, the No. 16-ranked Raiders notched their third upset in the last week with a 33-7 defeat of Menlo in which they won eight of 10 matches and scored bonus points in four of them.

Last Friday at the NWCA National Dual Meet Championships, No. 5 Doane (Neb.) represented the highest-ranked opponent SOU had defeated in nine years. The Oaks, who left a handful of starters behind, took Doane's place as their eight-dual winning streak in the head-to-head series against SOU came to an end.

The Raiders (8-3 overall) compiled bonus points in each of their wins against the Redhawks, getting pins from Vonn Fenn (125 pounds), Evan Potter (141), Shaiden Carr (165), Alex Hernandez (174) and Adrian Chavez-Morales (184). Jonathan Hernandez (149) and Aaron Gandara (157) rang up technical falls.

They carried the momentum carried over against Menlo, taking the first five bouts to build a 23-0 lead. The highlight was a fall for No. 11-ranked Simon Graeber (133), who finished his upset of No. 8 Jeremiah Steele in the second round after Fenn opened with a 15-0 win over Victor Atherton.

The top-ranked Potter held off No. 14 Michael Torres at 141, 7-3, and Jonathan Hernandez – who was a late edition to the lineup due to injury – made another critical contribution by defeating Logan Avina-Barajas, 8-4. Gandara's second win of the night, a pin of Mathias Collins, capped the rally.

Alex Hernandez, ranked No. 7 at 174, later added a major decision over Connor Cormier before No. 14-ranked Andrew Herrera (197) beat No. 17 Hunter James in marquee matchup, 4-1 and No. 25 Sebastian Echeverria (285) earned his first win attached to a ranking by shutting out Cole Steketee, 5-0.

The win was the Raiders' first against Menlo since the 2016-17 season.

They'll go for another upset Sunday when they host No. 11 Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) at 2 p.m.
