ASHLAND –
Sierra Scheppele's record chase kept the crowd engaged long after No. 24 Southern Oregon pulled away from Corban in a 74-49 victory Friday night at Lithia Motors Pavilion.
Scheppele, a junior guard in her first season with the Raiders, was one 3-pointer away from tying the SOU record for long-distance makes in a game by halftime with a sizzling 8-of-10 display. She finally took down Kara Magee-Arick's 21-year-old mark with four minutes to spare, finishing 10-of-14 from 3 with 32 points.
Her blistering efforts made the Raiders 12-4 overall and 8-2 in the Cascade Conference, one game out of first place. They were up 43-19 by the end of the second quarter, where Scheppele outscored the Warriors (5-11, 4-6) by herself with six triples.
She commanded more of Corban's attention after the break, getting up just one 3 in the third quarter – which she made. On her final attempt of the fourth, she dribbled into a shot a few feet behind the line, with a hand in her face, that went straight down.
Hers was the highest point total for a Raider in a CCC game since the 2014-15 season. She'd previously topped out at 24 points and six 3s two weeks ago against Multnomah, her only other outing eclipsing 15 points this year. In the Raiders' 12 wins, Scheppele has gone 40-of-95 from 3; in their four losses, she's gone 2-of-19.
Kami Walk pitched in 13 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals for the Raiders, who shot 14-of-31 from 3 as a team. Their old high for makes in a game was nine.
Maddie Godwin led the Warriors with 15 points, but SOU forced her to commit eight of their 21 turnovers.
The Raiders complete the homestand at 3 p.m. Saturday against Bushnell, which will enter with a 5-5 CCC record.
