GREAT FALLS, Mont. –
Andrew Herrera came up clutch in the No. 15 Southern Oregon men's wrestling team's sixth upset of a higher-ranked opponent this season, the latest a 19-17 defeat of No. 6 Providence (Mont.) on Saturday at McLaughlin Center Gymnasium.
Herrera and his opponent, Liam Swanson, entered their clash tied for No. 16 in the NAIA's 197-pound rankings, and with the Raiders clinging to a 16-13 lead but the Argos' No. 2-ranked heavyweight on deck for the final match. Herrera trailed until a takedown seconds before the third-period buzzer gave him a 5-3 decision and locked up the team victory.
Herrera's was the Raiders' only win over the final five bouts, but four triumphs in the first five set them up with a 16-3 lead.
Vonn Fenn (125 pounds) supplied critical bonus points with a second-round pin of Deandre Coles. Top-ranked
Evan Potter (141) contributed another with a 12-0 major decision over Dante Reviglio. No. 10
Simon Graeber (133) outlasted Tristan Bremer in a 4-3 decision, and No. 10
Aaron Gandara (157) got Bridger Hall, 4-2.
No. 14 Jordan Komac (165), No. 7 Abel Nava (174) and No. 18 Alan Badley (184) brought the Argos back in the dual with consecutive victories. A major decision for KC Buday, UP's aforementioned heavyweight, proved inconsequential after Herrera delivered for SOU.
The Raiders brought their dual record to 11-3 overall and 8-1 against Cascade Conference opponents. They've now defeated three top-six squads.
The Raiders are in action again next week, facing Eastern Oregon on Friday and Sweet Home and hosting Corban at 6 p.m. Saturday in Ashland.
