ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon University women's soccer team is at Raider Stadium for the last time this weekend, attempting to get back on track against the Cascade Conference's Montana contingent.

The Raiders (6-5 overall, 3-4 CCC) came up empty the last two weeks while facing three of the circuit's top teams consecutively and will see another on Friday as third-place Carroll (Mont.) (7-3-3, 4-2-1) comes to town. When Providence (Mont.) visits on Saturday, they'll honor their five seniors and celebrate Latino Day. Both games start at noon.

LATINO DAY: The Raiders' second annual Latino Day – a collaboration with SOU's Latino Student Union, Latino/a/x Programs, and the Office for Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion – is set for Saturday. The festivities will include a beer garden, taco truck, Latin music and more.

LAST WEEK IN REVIEW: Rocky Mountain (Mont.) keeper Hannah Trumbull kept SOU off the board with seven saves in a 1-0 Battlin' Bears victory last Friday in Billings. Charlize Davis assisted Mya Maack for the lone goal in the 15th minute, and the Raiders were held scoreless despite getting off 15 shot attempts. Abby McKean placed all three of hers on goal and Frida Vargas had two more on-target tries. The Bears also went on to defeat Oregon Tech two days later, giving them results against three of the top-four teams in the standings.

BRIEFLY:
  • The Raiders enter the weekend in eighth place – clinging to the final spot for the CCC Tournament, which will be held Nov. 10-14 in Medford. With five regular-season games left to play, they're one point ahead of ninth-place Corban (with a tiebreaker in hand) and one behind three teams that are tied for fifth place. SOU visits fourth-place Oregon Tech, which is three points ahead of the Raiders, next week.
  • In their six wins, the Raiders have scored 20 combined goals. In their five losses, they've scored two.
  • Senior keeper Ashlynn Hernandez is sitting on 25 career shutouts, needing two more to break the SOU record. She has five this season, and her save percentage in conference play (.816) is the third-best in the CCC.
  • Ava Johnson is among 15 players in the CCC with at least five goals. Frida Vargas is among four players with at least five assists. They lead SOU in those categories, and both have logged all of their points in Raider victories.
  • Ten different Raiders have scored at least one goal; six tallied in all of 2023. Two seniors, Skyler Coleman (4 goals, 2 assists) and Cora Thorndike (3 goals, 2 assists), have already posted career-best point totals.
  • The Raiders are 43-10-6 at home since the beginning of the 2016 season.

ABOUT CARROLL: The Saints were unbeaten in CCC play before losing back-to-back on the road last week to College of Idaho and Eastern Oregon. They even had a two-goal lead at C of I – which is well on its way to another conference title – before surrendering five in a row. They have the CCC's most prolific scorer in sophomore Delaney Moczan, who owns 11 goals and two assists. Their keeper, Maria Ackerman, was named to the All-CCC first team a year ago. The Raiders are 5-7-2 in the series but unbeaten in five straight matchups. Last year they tied the regular-season contest, 1-1 in Helena, and shocked the No. 2-seeded Saints 1-0 in the CCC Tournament quarterfinals with a late Mia Ammons game-winner.

ABOUT PROVIDENCE: The Argos enter the weekend losers of five in a row, a stretch that was preceded by a six-game unbeaten streak. They've been quiet of late offensively but feature another dangerous striker in senior Ernestina S. Ofori (9 goals, 2 asists), who accumulated five of her goals in a blowout of Walla Walla. During their losing streak, opponents have outscored them 15-3. SOU is 8-1 in the all-time series and won 4-0 each of the last two seasons.
