Saints beat Raiders to force 1st-place tie

ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon men's soccer team's path to a second straight Cascade Conference title got a little murkier on Friday at Raider Stadium, where Carroll (Mont.) forced a first-place tie with a 3-1 victory.

The Raiders' Cascade Conference unbeaten streak, which dated back to last September, ended at 17 games at the hands of the Saints. They took the lead on an own goal in the 58th minute, then closed the door when Caleb Hoxie gave them another in the 82nd.

Both teams ended the day with 7-1-1 CCC records. They're seven points up on third-place College of Idaho with four regular-season games to play and identical opponents remaining on their schedules.

The Saints (8-2-3 overall) struck first in the eighth minute, when a deflection landed with Michal Mojzis for a laser of a strike inside the box. The No. 24-ranked Raiders (10-3-1) equalized before halftime as Tristan Skerritt rebounded a saved shot off the foot of Evan Norconk, who was credited with an assist.

The game-winner was generated by Alan Gutierrez, who streaked down the right side on an advantage and sent a cross that found the foot of a Raider defender at an unfortunate angle right in front of the goal. Hoxie later padded the lead with an unassisted 25-yard strike of another loose ball.

SOU will recognize its 10 seniors prior to Saturday's 2:30 p.m. kickoff against last-place Providence (Mont.). After that, the Raiders play their final three on the road.
