Hayes brings SOU back late for draw with Carroll

ASHLAND Brooklyn Hayes provided the spark Southern Oregon needed to end a three-game on Friday afternoon, lifting her team out of a two-goal hole to salvage a 2-2 draw with Carroll (Mont.) at Raider Stadium.

Hayes, a sophomore forward from Cameron Park, Calif., came off the bench to log the first brace of her career with goals in the 66th and 88th minutes. With 2:01 left on the clock, she got to Cora Thorndike's corner kick before it hit the ground and chipped a 10-yard shot aligned with the right post over a scrum and in for the equalizer.

The Raiders went to 6-5-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the CCC, moving up to seventh place in the standings. The fourth-place Saints moved to 7-3-4 and 4-2-2.

Carroll broke a scoreless tie in the 51st minute when Jaymee Sheridan found Emily Funseth on a breakaway for a shot that went off keeper Ashlynn Hernandez's fingertips before finding the net. Nine minutes later, Delaney Moczan's 12th goal of the season made it 2-0.

Hayes cut the deficit in half in the 66th, taking a precision through-ball from Abby Fitzpatrick for a touch shot up close. The Raiders then got a break with five minutes remaining when Moczan was issued a red card, giving them an advantage on their successful set piece a few minutes later.

Hernandez kept them in the game despite Carroll's 9-4 edge in shots on goal. She made seven saves, marking her third-highest total of the season.

Hayes' goals were her third and fourth of the season.

The Raiders are home for the last time on Saturday, kicking off against Providence (Mont.) at noon.
