KIRKLAND, Wash. – Amid ultra-slick conditions at NU Athletic Field, Northwest (Wash.) stayed upright just enough to score the first two goals of the game early in the second half of a 2-1 victory against No. 25 Southern Oregon on Friday afternoon.
Ariel De Dios Cruz assisted
Bryan Mendoza to cut the lead in half with five minutes left for the Raiders, but they were unable to make anything of a couple free kicks the rest of the way.
NU's Matthew Ludlow punched in the go-ahead goal in the 48th minute, rebounding a shot from Elliot Misic that hit the crossbar. Ludlow made it 2-0 in the 59th.
The loss left SOU at 11-4-2 overall and 8-2-2 entering Saturday's regular-season finale at Evergreen (Wash.). It also locked up the championship for Carroll (Mont.), but SOU will still clinch the No. 2 seed with a win against the 11th-place Geoducks or if Eastern Oregon does anything less than win against Warner Pacific.
The Eagles went to 5-7-5 and 3-4-5. They snapped an eight-game Raiders unbeaten streak in road CCC games that dated back to last season. The win was their second in a row at home in the series with SOU.
Their keeper, Michael Kot, helped secure it with eight saves.
