MONMOUTH – The No. 2-ranked Southern Oregon softball team rallied late in Game 1 and stifled Western Oregon's attempt at doing the same in Game 2, winning 5-2 and 7-5 against the NCAA Division II squad Saturday in the teams' first meetings since 2003.
Katie Machado pitched a complete game in the opener, striking out six to work around 10 Wolves singles while allowing just one earned run. She was rewarded late: The Raiders erased a 2-0 deficit with
Faith Moultrie's infield run-scoring single in the fifth and
Piper Love's RBI looper to right in the sixth. They scored three in the seventh, where
Sammie Pemberton hit a sacrifice fly and an error on the play allowed a second run to score before
Hailey Seva tacked on with a triple.
A four-run first inning put the Raiders in front for good in Game 2. They had five hits in the frame, getting an RBI double from Love and RBI singles from Pemberton,
Hannah Clavelle and
Christina Tadvick.
Clavelle drove in another run in the fourth. After WOU's Natalie Willoughby hit grand slam in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to one,
Jordan Henderson's single and another Love double brought home insurance for the Raiders in the seventh.
The Wolves brought the potential tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but
Mayze Menefee closed the door. She pitched the final 3 1/3 innings in relief and surrendered one run in relief of
Kennedy Kila.
Love finished 4-of-8 with three RBIs on the day. Clavelle, Pemberton, Moultrie and
Kailer Fulton had three hits apiece, and the Raiders totaled 20 across the doubleheader.
The Wolves dropped to 2-4.
SOU travels next week to Arizona, visiting Arizona Christian for a doubleheader on Friday and playing Ottawa (Ariz.) and Park Gilbert (Ariz.) in single games on Saturday.
