ASHLAND – Down a pair of injured starters, top-seeded Southern Oregon got the lift it needed from
Izzy Hernandez's hot hand to score a 71-55 win against No. 8 seed Corban in Tuesday's quarterfinal round of the Cascade Conference Championships presented by U.S. Bank at Lithia Motors Pavilion.
Hernandez drained all five of her 3-point attempts – downing three during a third quarter in which the Raiders (25-4) outscored the Warriors (8-21) 23-11 – and recorded career-highs of 19 points and five steals. The senior shined in the backcourt alongside
Meghan McIntyre, who was on triple-double watch with 18 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists.
The Raiders advanced to host No. 4 seed Eastern Oregon at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the semifinals. The Mountaineers, who beat up Bushnell in their quarterfinal, were swept in the regular-season series by SOU for the first time in 15 years, but the Raiders needed McIntyre's tiebreaking bucket in the final seconds to get by a month ago in La Grande.
SOU was without guard
Sierra Scheppele (who went 16-of-21 from 3 in the regular season against Corban) and forward
Clara Robbins against the Warriors, but
Kami Walk held down the frontcourt with 15 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots, and Hernandez took care of the shooting. Her first pair of 3s bookended a 17-3 surge to close the first quarter, putting the Raiders up 27-14, and the second triple was a buzzer-beater on the run.
The Warriors, led by Maddie Godwin's 17 points and Autumn Agnew's 15, shrunk their deficit to five points by the end of the second quarter. Hernandez's stroke opened it up again in the third.
SOU limited Corban to 36-percent shooting and neutralized its own shaky 27-of-70 mark with 16 offensive rebounds.
Emma Schmerbach helped defensively with two blocks and a steal,
Makayla Scurlock scored nine points, and
Eliza DiGiulio contributed five points and four boards off the bench.
The Raiders are into the semifinals for the 10th time in the last 11 seasons.
