CALDWELL, Idaho – Southern Oregon made No. 3-ranked College of Idaho sweat for a while Saturday at the J.A. Albertson Activities Center, which is more than most have been able to say during the Yotes' 23-game winning streak.
After weathering SOU's hot start, the Yotes pulled away for a 77-64 victory in the semifinal round of the Cascade Conference Championships presented by U.S. Bank, giving themselves a chance to claim their sixth consecutive tournament title when they host Tuesday's final.
The point total matched their lowest since December, but they committed just five turnovers and posted a 35-13 advantage in bench scoring. Straton Rogers led the reserves with 11 points, nine rebounds and four assists, and Dougie Peoples scored 10. They helped the Yotes turn an early 13-4 deficit into a 37-29 halftime lead.
A five-minute SOU field-goal drought in the second half enabled the Yotes to stage a 12-1 run, taking their lead to 23 points with eight minutes left.
C of I (28-2 overall) still hasn't lost since going down 81-75 in Ashland on Dec. 1. Over the last month, the defending national champions have won 10 games by an average margin of 33 points.
The No. 4-seeded Raiders were appearing in the semifinals for the sixth consecutive postseason. They finished with a 17-13 record.
They got stellar performances from a few seniors in their final outings.
Dominic McGarvey went out with 18 points and 11 rebounds, his fourth double-double in two years at SOU.
Brett Hollins recorded 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists, and
Cole McAninch had 10 points with a pair of early 3-pointers that put the Raiders in front.
