Machado, Menefee sharp in Raiders' sweep

ASHLAND Katie Machado and Mayze Menefee kept Bushnell's bats quiet in No. 10-ranked Southern Oregon's 8-0 and 7-1 Cascade Conference victories Thursday afternoon at University Field.

Machado's 12th complete game, a three-hit shutout, made her 12-3 and only required her to toss five innings after the Raiders (23-8 overall, 11-3 CCC) triggered the run rule in Game 1. Menefee went to 8-3 with a five-hitter, and SOU's lineup gave her some breathing room with a four-run sixth inning aided by a pair of Beacons (6-23, 1-13) errors in Game 2.

Third baseman Hannah Clavelle, the reigning CCC Player of the Week, lined her fourth home run in the series opener – a three-run shot that gave the Raiders a 7-0 lead in the third inning. Piper Love preceded that shot with an RBI single and a two-run double, and Faith Moultrie went 2-for-2 with a double, a walk and three runs scored.

Bushnell starter Emily Cole made life tougher on the Raiders in Game 2. Sarah Kerling's two-run single had them up 2-1 entering the fifth inning, where Kennedy Kila doubled the lead with a single through the left side that scored Moultrie.

Hailey Seva led off the sixth with a double and scored on Sammie Pemberton's sacrifice fly, and the floodgates opened after two defensive miscues. Kila put the finishing touches on the rally with a two-run double.

Menefee struck out four and walked one. She was following up on Machado's second shutout of the season, a performance in which she recorded three strikeouts and one walk.

The Raiders and Beacons will complete the set with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. Friday.
