ASHLAND – Unchallenged through two weeks against Cascade Conference competition, No. 8-ranked Southern Oregon wrapped up another four-game sweep Saturday with 9-1 and 5-0 wins over Carroll (Mont.) at University Field.
The Raiders (17-4 overall, 6-0 CCC) outscored the Saints (3-12-1, 0-5) 25-2 in the series and needed only five innings in Game 1 to stay perfect through the three-game CCC portion of it.
Katie Machado gave up six hits in another complete-game gem, while
Jordan Henderson homered and
Sarah Kerling went 2-for-2 with an RBI single and a two-run double.
Mayze Menefee earned the Game 2 decision by pitching four scoreless innings in relief, getting the Raiders out of a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the first inning. It was the first of three instances the Saints left three runners stranded:
Katie Fodge, who handled the final two frames, got out of another no-out jam after taking over with the bases full in the sixth.
Henderson,
Hannah Clavelle,
Faith Moultrie and
Lina Sanchez tallied an RBI apiece in the finale, and
Brooke Nordahl poked two doubles and scored a run.
Defense was problematic all weekend for the Saints: They committed 11 errors to SOU's two and had three in Saturday's opener, the first of which allowed the Raiders to take the lead with three unearned runs in the second inning on Kerling's double and Nordahl's triple.
The Raiders struck for four in the third – where Henderson went deep inside the left-field foul pole, Clavelle sliced a double down the line and Kerling hit a two-run single – and Piper love put the finishing touches on the run-rule affair in the fourth with an RBI triple to deep right-center.
Machado improved to 9-1 with her seventh complete game of the season. Over her last four outings, the senior right-hander has worked 20 innings, allowed four runs and compiled 23 strikeouts.
Menefee threw 10 scoreless innings on the weekend. Her record stands at 7-3.
The competition ramps up next weekend when the Raiders visit No. 6-ranked Oregon Tech, the preseason favorite to win the CCC.
