Raiders, Yotes trade comeback jabs in split

CALDWELL, Idaho – No. 13-ranked Southern Oregon and No. 20 College of Idaho exchanged late-inning rallies and settled on a split of a critical Cascade Conference doubleheader Friday at Symms Field.

The Yotes claimed Game 1, 8-6, after utilizing the long ball to turn around a four-run deficit over their final two at-bats, but a pair of clutch hits from Hannah Clavelle brought the Raiders back from three runs down to score a 4-3 win in Game 2.

With four CCC regular-season counters remaining – including the first half of Saturday's 10 a.m. PDT twin bill – the results brought SOU to 32-11 overall and 18-5 in the circuit, while C of I went to 29-11 and 18-4. The teams remain behind co-leaders Eastern Oregon and Oregon Tech, which both swept on Friday to make their conference records 20-3.

In the opener, C of I spoiled a fast SOU start propelled by Piper Love's two-run home run in the first inning and Clavelle's solo shot in the second. The lead was 6-2 following Brooke Nordahl's RBI single in the top of the sixth inning, but the Yotes got to Raiders ace Katie Machado in the bottom half.

They cut into the deficit with a three-run rally, keyed by run-scoring hits from Lexi Navarrete and Hallie Holland, then struck for three more in the seventh against reliever Mayze Menefee. Lolo Walker tied the game with a leadoff solo blast to center field, and two batters later Madelyn Powell walked it off with another homer to left.

Walker also got the Yotes going in Game 2, hitting and RBI single in the first and scoring on a wild pitch in the third to make the score 3-0.

Clavelle finally put the Raiders on the board in the fourth with a two-run double. In the sixth, Kennedy Kila chased Love home for the tying run with another double down the line, and the next batter, Clavelle, gave SOU the lead with a bouncer that turned into a hit and plated Kila.

Machado handled the final two innings in the circle to earn her fourth save. Kila pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win.

Clavelle, Kailer Fulton and Sarah Kerling tallied three hits apiece on the day. Love and Nordahl both had two.
