KLAMATH FALLS – Hannah Tyree hit a tiebreaking two-run home run in the fifth inning that lifted No. 10-ranked Eastern Oregon to a 5-4 win over No. 17 Southern Oregon in the final round of the Cascade Conference Championships presented by U.S. Bank on Monday at Stilwell Stadium.
The Mountaineers (37-8 overall), seeded No. 2, completed an unbeaten run through the tournament to claim their first championship since 2016. The No. 4-seeded Raiders (37-17), who earned a spot in the game with their second straight upset of regular-season champ Oregon Tech earlier in the day, would've needed to defeat EOU twice to take the title.
The Raiders missed on a couple opportunities to force a winner-take-all finale.
Faith Moultrie's infield RBI single shaved their deficit to 5-4 and kept the bases loaded with one out in the sixth, but Kylie Parsons got EOU out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat.
Hailey Seva reached on an error to start the seventh and was sacrificed to second, but Parsons escaped again by inducing back-to-back groundouts.
Parsons, who earned a complete-game victory in EOU's 2-1 defeat of SOU on Sunday, got the save in relief of CCC Pitcher of the Year Kaylie Hoskins, who struck out eight and allowed four runs (two earned) over 5 1/3 innings.
The Mountaineers secured an automatic berth in the NAIA Championships Opening Round, which takes place May 13-16. The Raiders are expected to receive an at-large bid in the 48-team field when it is announced at 2 p.m. Tuesday on the NAIA's YouTube channel.
Sarah Kerling completed a strong tournament showing with two hits for the Raiders.
Sammie Pemberton, who added a sacrifice fly, finished 6-for-15 with three doubles at the tourney. Moultrie also went 6-for-15 and Kailey Fulton went 5-for-13 with five runs scored.
The Raiders were appearing in the final round for the first time since 2019. They'd gone 3-6 at the tournament over the previous three seasons, two of which ended in NAIA World Series championships.
