SOU's lead stolen late in 2-1 loss at Stanislaus

TURLOCK, Calif. – Stanislaus State (Calif.) denied Southern Oregon's upset bid by scoring the equalizing and go-ahead goals in the final minutes Sunday night to steal a 2-1 win at Warrior Stadium.

SOU's Skyler Coleman tallied the first goal in the 33rd minute, and goalkeeper Ashlynn Hernandez turned away the first 10 on-target shots she faced before the Warriors (3-1 overall) made their move. Aliah Avila created both scores in short order, assisting Jocelin Roa in the 82nd minute and Shauna Johnston in the 84th.

The Raiders (3-1) were seeking their first win against Stanislaus, a member of the NCAA Division II California Collegiate Athletic Association and head coach Jenni Rosenberg's alma mater. They were also attempting to open a season on a four-game win streak for the first time in team history.

Each of SOU's last four trips to Stanislaus – which has turned in winning records each of the last 16 seasons – has resulted in losses decided by one goal. Rosenberg has experienced her share of heartache against SSU's Gabriel Bolton, the man she got her start under as an assistant before taking over at SOU in 2013. The 2019 Raiders had a 3-1 lead against the Warriors before giving up goals in the 81st and 82nd minutes and the golden goal in overtime.

Coleman's second goal of the season and Hernandez's brilliance gave them another shot this time around. Hernandez finished with 11 saves, the second-highest total of her career. SSU's Malia Allen only had to make one save to get the keeper victory.

The game was the last in nonleague play for the Raiders. They open their Cascade Conference schedule at home next weekend – 12 p.m. Friday against Multnomah and 11 a.m. Sunday against Warner Pacific.
