ASHLAND – If Southern Oregon's minds drifted prematurely to Saturday's top-five matchup, College of Idaho commanded full attention in a hurry Friday night at Lithia Motors Pavilion.
The No. 5-ranked Raiders had to come back from a first-set loss and climb out of a third-set hole to pull out a 20-25, 25-12, 25-22, 25-21 Cascade Conference win over the Yotes. Senior right-side hitters
Megan Perry and
Hannah Stadstad made it happen with 33 combined kills.
Perry established a new career-high with 18 kills on only 34 swings. Stadstad, after recording two kills and four attacking errors in the opening frame, heated up with 13 kills and three errors the rest of the way. Senior outside hitter
Marin Mackey supplied 13 kills and 15 digs, making her the first Raider in 13 years to log five consecutive double-doubles.
The win set up Saturday's 6 p.m. match between SOU (8-0 overall, 2-0 CCC) and No. 2 Eastern Oregon. The Mountaineers also remained unbeaten with a straight-set win Friday at Oregon Tech.
Winners of four of their last five entering the night, the Yotes (4-5, 0-1) were spurred by middle Alexa Wheeler's 12 kills and five blocks. They stole the first set with three blocks during a 10-2 run that closed it.
The Raiders rolled through the second on the strength of a 12-2 push that gave them a 13-5 cushion, getting five kills from Stadstad and four more from Mackey in the frame.
In the third, they trailed 20-16 before
Mylena Testoni delivered a kill and served them to three more points in a row. The Yotes maintained a 21-20 edge when a Perry kill, an attacking error and Perry's joint block with
Sadie Byrd put SOU in the driver's seat, ending the set with kills from Byrd and Stadstad.
The Raiders needed to rally again in the fourth, this time from a 13-10 deficit, but Perry and Stadstad nailed down seven kills the rest of the way to avoid a tiebreaker.
Testoni did her best work toward the end of the night, finishing with eight kills and a match-high 17 digs.
Vitoria Mattos had 29 assists,
Annie Hite had 22, and
Kayla Neidigh added five with 15 digs to lead a .255 attack. All three supplied a pair of service aces.
The Yotes hit at a .182 clip, becoming the eighth consecutive SOU opponent to land under .200.
The Raiders have won four consecutive meetings with C of I for the first time since 2001-03.
