SOU picks up season-opening sweep at Simpson

REDDING, Calif.Ayla Davies started her collegiate career with a shutout and a save in back-to-back Southern Oregon wins over Simpson (Calif.), 11-0 in five innings and 7-4 on opening day for both teams Thursday at SU Field.

Davies, a three-time state pitcher of the year at Burns High, debuted with a two-hitter in which she struck out seven and didn't issue a walk. After surrendering a leadoff single, she retired 15 of the next 16 Redhawks she faced.

The No. 4-ranked Raiders gave her a four-run cushion in the second inning and piled on six more in the fourth. Sarah Kerling went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI double, Kailer Fulton drove in two with a pair of hits, and Vanessa Lang stroked a two-run single.

Fulton, a senior left fielder, led SOU with four hits on the day, including an RBI double in Game 2. There, the Raiders turned two Simpson errors into three unearned runs that were ultimately the difference.

Down 1-0 in the third inning, they loaded the bases with one out and scored four times on an error, a fielder's choice and a first-and-third steal play. Kierstin Grotewiel added an RBI single in the fourth to make it 5-1. After the Redhawks cut the lead to two, Ari Williams followed Fulton's run-scoring hit with another RBI single.

Starter Katie Fodge earned the decision with four innings of three-hit work. She allowed one run before giving way to the bullpen, and Davies locked down the final five outs.

The Raiders committed only one error defensively. Dating back to 2024, they've committed fewer than two in 23 of their last 24 games.

They're off until next week's trip to Hawaii, where they'll play two at Chaminade on Feb. 9 and two at Hawaii Pacific on Feb. 10.
