SOU survives at Northwest, 80-76

KIRKLAND, Wash. – Southern Oregon watched a potential go-ahead 3-pointer rim off for Northwest (Wash.) in the closing seconds and held on for an 80-76 win in Cascade Conference action Friday night at Brodin Pavilion.

Mason Whittaker logged 16 points with four 3-pointers and seven rebounds, Gabe Reichle shot 5-of-9 with three 3s to score 15, and reserve Jack Chlumak delivered 10 of his 13 points in the second half as the Raiders improved to 13-7 overall and 8-6 in the CCC.

There were nine lead changes and eight ties in the second half alone. The scored knotted for the last time at 72-72 with 1:13 to go when Chlumak, who hit 5-of-7 attempts, finished at the basket and absorbed a foul, completing a three-point play.

A defensive stop led to Bryce Dyer's bucket that made it 77-72 with 31 seconds left, but moments later Eagles guard Ethan Martin converted a four-point play.

Down one with 14 seconds remaining, the Eagles were forced to foul Elijah Jackson, who split a pair of free throws. With a chance to take the lead, they missed a look from deep and were called for going over-the-back on the subsequent rebound. Dyer then knocked down two free throws, accounting for the fnial score.

The game was the Raiders' seventh in conference play decided by five or fewer points, and their second win in such games.

They got solid production inside from Dyer (9 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals) and Joe Juhala (9 points, 10 rebounds). Their bench outscored Northwest's, 37-26, behind Chlumak and Whittaker. Liam Clark helped that cause by going 4-of-6 for eight points.

Reichle and Whittaker combined for 19 in the first half, giving SOU a 36-34 edge at the break. Whittaker has scored in double figures four games in a row, averaging 13.8 points with 13 3-pointers during the stretch.

Northwest, paced by Wobrock's 19 points, fell to 3-17 and 2-12.

The Raiders visit last-place Evergreen (Wash.) at 5 p.m. Saturday before returning home to meet Oregon Tech on Tuesday.
