GLENDALE, Ariz. – Southern Oregon ended the night with 17 unanswered points and got back to .500 in the Frontier Conference West Division with a 38-14 win against Arizona Christian on Saturday at ACU Field.
Dom Montiel and
Fresh Ison steered a turnover-free offense that racked up 407 yards – Montiel with 22 completions on 25 attempts and a pair of touchdown passes, and Ison with career-highs of three scores and 100 yards on 16 carries.
SOU also came up with four takeaways while limiting the Firestorm to 207 yards, an effort highlighted by
Spencer Kuffel's two-interception game.
The Raiders improved to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in divisional play heading into their penultimate game of regular season and home finale next week against No. 9 Carroll (Mont.). ACU fell to 1-6 and 0-3.
The Firestorm went 83 yards to the end zone on the first possession of the game but their muffed punt near the end of the first quarter set SOU up with a short field, enabling the Raiders to tie the score on Montiel's 16-yard pass to
Milan Reilly. SOU took its first lead at 14-7 just 32 seconds before halftime as Ison capped a 12-play march with a four-yard rush.
The Raiders made it a two-score game by taking the first drive of the second half 89 yards on 12 plays and finishing it with
Luke Newell's one-yard catch in the end zone.
Immediately after ACU cut the lead to 21-14 with two minutes left in the third,
Brandon Barthel positioned the Raiders with a 67-yard kickoff return and Ison took advantage a few plays later with a six-yard TD. Ison completed his performance with an eight-yard TD in the fourth after the Raiders worked another short field thanks to
Raiden House's forced fumble on a kickoff recovered by
Cole Plum-Kazmierczak.
Brian Batres contributed a 36-yard field goal in the fourth and was perfect on five extra-point tries.
Trevor Jaasko made seven catches for 75 yards and Barthel had seven more for 69.
Kuffel's interceptions, both collected in the second half, were the eighth and ninth of his career. They were initially tipped by Will Kanavlov Jr. – who also had a fumble recovery – and
Andreas Villanueva.
Brandon Dominguez and
Gabe Foster recorded a sack apiece. Foster is up to 7 ½ this season, having gotten in on at least one in seven of eight games. House led the team with seven tackles.
