MEDFORD – A hard-fought semifinal battle ended in shootout heartbreak for the Southern Oregon women's soccer team in Monday's semifinal round of the Cascade Conference Championships presented by U.S. Bank.
After 110 scoreless minutes of play, No. 3-seeded Eastern Oregon advanced past No. 2-seeded SOU 4-2 in penalty kicks, denying the Raiders their first championship game appearance at Wheeler Field.
EOU keeper Madeline Barker was the hero after stopping two of SOU's first three PK attempts. She and the Mountaineers (14-4-2 overall) will face top-seeded College of Idaho in Wednesday's final and clinched the CCC's second automatic bid for the NAIA National Tournament.
The tie made the Raiders 14-2-2. They'll still be a strong candidate for an at-large bid when the 40-team national tourney field is announced at 4 p.m. Friday. They were No. 20 in the NAIA RPI rankings when the day began and EOU was No. 19.
The Mountaineers were the aggressors early and finished with 17 fouls (including two yellow cards) to SOU's four, but the Raiders settled into the game and matched EOU with four shots on goal.
Frida Vargas accounted for two of their best chances, lacing a pair of free kicks that Barker leapt to grab.
Mia Ammons had the other, a one-on-one chance against Barker in the 42nd minute that she put off the post.
The back line held strong, keeping the Mountaineers without a shot in 20 minutes of overtime.
Brittany Standley made four saves in the Raiders' 11th shutout, which extended their unbeaten streak to six games.
Ava Johnson and
Kaylah Bresee converted for SOU in the shootout. Standley stopped the Mountaineers' second attempt before consecutive makes by Jillian Brown, Ashley Smith and Holly Dorhauer clinched it for them.
C of I the other semifinal 4-0 against Rocky Mountain (Mont.).
