POMONA, Calif. – Southern Oregon pushed an NCAA Division II opponent, Cal Poly Pomona, for the second time this week before faltering down the stretch of a 63-49 loss on Saturday night at Kellogg Arena.
The Broncos – picked as preseason favorites to win the California Collegiate Athletic Conference – held a slim five-point lead until starting an 8-0 run in the final minute of the third quarter that left them comfortably ahead for the rest of the game.
Freshman forward
Lydia Traore registered her first double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Raiders, shooting 6-of-9 and grabbing six offensive boards off the bench. Senior forward
Eliza DiGiulio scored 13 and
Keeley Wright had 12 with five rebounds and three steals.
The Raiders got 17 of their 21 buckets from that trio while struggling to the tune of a 32% clip from the field. After earlier in the week defeating Chico State, another CCAA team, they dropped to 4-3.
Advantages in offensive boards (17-14) and turnovers forced (18-16) kept them in the fight after they fell behind 22-12 through one quarter.
Jeanette Fine scored 15 points and Mydrea Moore had 10 points and 10 boards for the Broncos, who improved to 2-1. They were particularly effective in transition, running up a 25-8 edge in fastbreak points.
Before the loss, the Raiders had won four games in a row against NCAA DII teams over the last decade.
They'll remain in Southern California to play their final non-conference game against Hope International at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
