Southern Oregon caps perfect trip with sweep of Hawaii Pacific

HONOLULU – Hours after being named the Cascade Conference Pitcher of the Week, Southern Oregon freshman Ayla Davies struck out 10 in a one-hit shutout as No. 4-ranked Southern Oregon swept another NCAA Division II opponent, Hawaii Pacific, by scores of 5-0 and 6-5 on Monday afternoon.

The No. 4-ranked Raiders completed their perfect trip at 6-0. Davies, who pitched eight scoreless innings on Sunday at Chaminade (Hawaii), blanked the Sharks for seven innings in a 119-pitch gem, upping her record to 3-0 and shrinking her ERA to 0.32. She walked five but faced only four batters over the minimum as catcher Piper Love caught runner down stealing and another was erased on a double play.

Faith Moultrie went 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly and an RBI double. SOU totaled nine hits and got two from center fielder Sarah Kerling, who drove in a run and scored one. Christina Tadvick added a run-scoring single and Sammie Pemberton had an RBI.

Mayze Menefee got the Game 2 win with a four-inning performance in which she allowed two runs. She kept the Sharks (6-7) off the board over her first three frames as the Raiders built a 6-0 lead.

Love got SOU going with a two-run single in the third inning. Ari Williams went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, Kailer Fulton reached base three times and scored twice, and Kerling and Kila Kennedy had two hits apiece. Pemberton added an RBI single.

Davies came on with the Raiders clinging to a 6-4 lead and two out in the seventh. After surrendering back-to-back doubles, she recorded a strikeout to notch her third save.

The Raiders are off until Feb. 21, when they'll bring their unbeaten record to the NAIA SB Invitational in Shawnee, Okla., and face three of the top-eight teams in the NAIA poll.
