CHICKASHA, Okla. –
Ayla Davies threw the seventh no-hitter in Southern Oregon softball history, a five-inning job in which the No. 4-ranked Raiders drilled No. 17 Hope International (Calif.) 8-0 on Friday afternoon at Bill Smith Ballpark.
Davies, now 4-0 with a 0.23 ERA, struck out eight, walked one, and faced the minimum as catcher
Piper Love caught the Royals' only baserunner attempting to steal. Hers was the first no-no ever tossed by an SOU freshman, as well as the first against a Top 25 opponent.
The Raiders (8-0 overall) backed Davies up with nine hits and were aided by four HIU (5-1) errors, striking for three runs in the first inning and three more in the second.
Kailer Fulton went 3-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored, extending her season-opening hitting streak to eight games and boosting her batting average to .680.
Ari Williams was 2-for-3 with a walk, three RBIs and a run scored. Love and Kila Kennedy had an RBI apiece.
The Royals walked in SOU's first two runs of the contest. Their sloppy play continued in the second when they let a run in on a throwing error and another on a squeeze bunt.
It was more than enough for Davies, whose scoreless streak was extended to 23 1/3 innings.
The game was the first at the NAIA SB Invitational, which was originally scheduled to be played entirely in Shawnee, Okla. Freezing temperatures forced the location change and an adjusted schedule that now has the Raiders playing three games on Saturday: 8 a.m. PT against Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.), 10:15 a.m. against No. 2 Science & Arts (Okla.), and 2:45 p.m. against No. 3 Cumberlands (Ky.). They'll conclude their stay Sunday with an 8 a.m. matchup against Campbellsville (Ky.).
