ASHLAND – Southern Oregon's veteran backcourt kept humming Saturday against Corban, combining for 54 points on 29 shots in a comfortable 83-66 win at Lithia Motors Pavilion that showed the Raiders continuing to ascend at the right time.
Gabe Reichle was the headliner with a career-high 25 points – 15 of which he scored in the second half to put the Warriors away – on 7-of-12 shooting with four steals.
Elijah Jackson logged 15 points, matched a career-high with seven assists and pulled down six rebounds, and
Mason Whittaker went 5-of-10 with 14 points, five boards and two assists.
The Raiders, winners of eight of their last nine, moved to 16-7 overall and 11-6 in the Cascade Conference, ending the weekend in fourth place with five regular-season games remaining. In the process they corrected an early misstep – a 67-62 loss to Corban on Dec. 20 that left them four games behind the Warriors (12-12, 10-8) just four games into the CCC schedule.
The Warriors departed Ashland this time around 1 ½ games behind SOU after trailing for the final 32 minutes of play and by 12-plus for the duration of the second half.
The Raiders shot 52% from the field, hitting over half of their attempts for the third game in a row, and went 22-of-25 at the free-throw line while stymying Corban to the tune of 37% shooting. They were down 13-9 early when they constructed a 20-4 run, fueled by 3-pointers from Whittaker and
Bryce Dyer and a three-point play from Reichle, and punctuated by an authoritative
Liam Clark slam.
Reichle and Whittaker opened the second half with back-to-back 3s, and after a
Joe Juhala dunk via Whittaker's feed the advantage was suddenly 50-30 with 18 minutes remaining.
Dyer recorded seven points, 13 rebounds and four assists, posting a double-digit number on the glass for the ninth time this season. Juhala scored eight points, and Clark came on to chip in nine points on 4-of-7 shooting and five boards.
The Raiders improved to 7-1 at home, their only loss of that bunch a four-point decision against first-place College of Idaho.
Andrew Classen scored 11 points for Corban, and three more Warriors scored 10 apiece. Their top scorer on the season, Spivey Word, needed 14 shots to reach nine points.
The Raiders are only one game in the loss column behind third-place Lewis-Clark State (Idaho), which they defeated 73-69 on Jan. 17. They visit LC State next Saturday after Friday's trip to Walla Walla (Wash.).
