HELENA, Mont. – Southern Oregon reached the 20-win mark as fast as any team in program history while completing a four-game sweep of Carroll (Mont.) on Saturday, 2-0 and 11-0 at Nelson Stadium.
Freshman pitcher
Ayla Davies gave the No. 1-ranked Raiders (21-1 overall, 6-0 Cascade Conference) the third and final CCC counter of the series in Game 1 with her seventh complete-game shutout of the season.
Kennedy Kila blanked the Saints (5-11, 2-4) in the five-inning, run-rule-shortened finale.
For the first time ever, the Raiders got through a four-game series against a conference opponent without surrendering an earned run. They outscored Carroll 26-1 on the weekend, a week after the Saints scored a combined 32 runs against No. 24 College of Idaho.
Davies, now 13-1, scattered five singles and didn't issue a walk in her start, allowing just one Saint to get past first base. Senior shortstop
Sammie Pemberton gave her the lead in the second inning with a two-out, opposite-field triple that plated
Ari Williams, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame.
In the fifth, the Raiders strung together a walk and three hits, the last of which was a
Faith Moultrie RBI single to put the Raiders up 2-0. It scored
Sarah Kerling, who went 2-for-3 in the contest.
Carroll starter Kennedy Venner limited the Raiders to seven hits, but they broke out for 14 in their Game 2 romp. Sophomore catcher
Kierstin Grotewiel went 2-for-3 with a walk, three RBIs and a run scored, and
Piper Love was 2-for-3 with a double, a run and her fifth RBI of the series.
Leadoff hitter
Vanessa Lang reached base safely for the 20th game this season with a two-run single. The Raiders scored in every inning – 11 different players recorded a hit – and put up four in the fifth to trigger the mercy rule.
Christina Tadvick came off the bench to go 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI, and
Glory Pistole's first career hit brought home another run.
Kila, making her second start, earned her first shutout by going all five innings. She gave up four hits and struck out two.
The only other SOU team to win 21 of its first 22 games was the 2021 squad, which started 25-1 and went on to win the program's second national title.
The Raiders are home next weekend for a marquee matchup with No. 2 Oregon Tech. Doubleheaders begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday at University Field.
