ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon University beach volleyball team claimed its highest ranking yet in Wednesday's final NAIA Top 10 poll as its top pair hauled in multiple postseason honors.
The Raiders went out at No. 4 after advancing to the semifinal round of last weekend's NAIA Invitational, and they produced American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Americans in
Madi Gray and
Tessa Zimmermann. Gray and Zimmermann were also named to the invitational's All-Tournament team.
In the program's third season, the Raiders finished 19-11 overall, including a 12-3 record in Cascade Conference duals. They outperformed their No. 8 seed in their first appearance the year-end tournament with a 3-2 showing – defeating No. 1 Ottawa (Ariz.) and No. 5 Arizona Christian in pool play, then upsetting No. 6 Mobile (Ala.) in the quarterfinals.
SOU was stopped short of the championship round in a 3-2 semifinal loss to No. 2 Corban. Ottawa went on to win the title.
Gray and Zimmermann, serving as SOU's No. 1 pair for the second year in a row, were at their best down the stretch. They went 3-2 at the Invitational, collecting each of their wins in straight sets, and posted a 16-12 overall record.
Previously, they were named to the All-CCC first team and Gray was voted the conference's Defender of the Year for the third consecutive season.
The official NAIA All-America list will be released on Thursday.
