ASHLAND – College of Idaho was picked to repeat as champion and Southern Oregon was picked fifth in a tight Cascade Conference women's soccer preseason poll, released this week by the CCC office.
C of I – which last year outscored opponents 49-6 combined in conference play on its way to a second straight title and an NAIA semifinal-round appearance – was the unanimous favorite, trailed in the poll by Oregon Tech, Eastern Oregon and Carroll (Mont.).
The Raiders were next, set to follow up on an 8-7-2 season in which they went 5-5-2 in the circuit to tie for sixth place on the table.
They'll have their most veteran team in recent history, bringing back six players who started 10 or more games and 20 players in total. Junior midfielder
Frida Vargas is back after earning a spot on the All-CCC second team in 2024, when she led the Raiders in points with four goals and six assists. So is senior defender
Miller Bertani, who has 50 career starts under her belt and received All-CCC honorable mention last year.
The Raiders debut at home Aug. 23 at 8 a.m. against Benedictine Mesa (Ariz.). A complete season preview will be published next week.
