FOREST GROVE – Minutes into the season,
Ariel De Dios Cruz served up the longest – and perhaps the most audacious – goal in Southern Oregon men's soccer history. He wasn't done, either.
De Dios Cruz provided all of the offense in the Raiders' 2-0 debut victory against Pacific on Thursday afternoon at Hanson Stadium. The Willamette High product began his sophomore season in style with a 55-yard attempt in the 34th minute, taken after a few touches and
Jonathan Gaspar's assist, that sailed just over the fingertips of retreating goalkeeper Kobi Miyamoto and one-hopped inside the right post.
The brace was the first in the career of De Dios Cruz, who tallied three times as a freshman. He got his second goal in the 43rd minute on a breakaway, taking the ball off a defender's shin and punching it home after
Mustafa Daggig passed in his direction.
The Raiders have opened each of the last six seasons with victories and the last four of those with clean sheets. They didn't surrender a shot in this one while generating 11 of their own.
The game was a non-counting exhibition for Pacific, an NCAA Division III member of the Northwest Conference.
SOU goalkeeper
Casey Ruvolo was credited with his 23rd career shutout, bringing him within seven of the team record.
The Raiders make their home debut at 10:30 a.m. Saturday against Benedictine Mesa (Ariz.). SOU took a 3-0 decision between the teams last year.
